The £16 Mistake That Could Ruin Your UK Trip: ETA Rules Explained
From Wednesday 25 February 2026, every visitor from a visa-exempt country will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding transport to the UK. Failure to obtain one could mean being denied boarding, missing flights, or facing significant disruption to travel plans.
What is the UK ETA?
The Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital pre-screening system similar to the US ESTA or Australia's eVisitor scheme. Travellers must apply online or via a mobile app, pay a £16 fee, and receive approval before departure.
Who Needs an ETA?
The requirement applies to visitors from all visa-exempt countries including United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and all European Union member states.
How to Apply
The quickest method is the UK ETA mobile app. Most applications receive a decision within minutes, though travellers are advised to apply at least 72 hours before departure.
What Happens Without an ETA?
Airlines will deny boarding to passengers without valid ETAs. Travellers who somehow reach the UK border without an ETA may be refused entry and returned to their point of departure at their own expense.
